Jacob was careful not to look back as he descended the last pile of rubble into the east clearing. His entrance drew a great deal of attention, multiple sets of curious, even eager eyes following him as he approached, but he focused on only one: Caspian Mason. The man who he believed was his father for the past three years watched him with a keen interest, waving his hand to ward off what appeared to be several guards.

“Father,” Jacob said, pausing a few paces before the man.

“Son,” Caspian replied stoically.

There was a moment of terse silence, Jacob hesitating before running to the other man and embracing him tightly. “I feared the worst,” he whispered fiercely. “I’m so sorry… about everything.” He pulled away and looked into the other man’s eyes.

A wash of confusion and delight seemed to play across Caspian’s face, before he settled upon pleasantly surprised. “I must say I am happy to see you pulled through, Son. I feared I’d lost you when the city fell. How did you manage to survive?”

“I was outside of the city limits when it came down. I rode my hoverbike to the coast. I needed time to think… to sort out my priorities. I’m sorry father. I was wrong, wrong about everything.” He cast his face aside in shame, feinting reluctance to meet Caspian’s gaze.

“You made the right choice in the end,” the older man replied, resting a reassuring hand on Jacob’s arm. “The world is changing, and now more than ever, Airhee requires strong leadership at the forefront. The Monarch has fallen.”

“What?!” Jacob blurted out, utterly shocked.

“A new force is coming to Airhee, and humanity will be looking for guidance and protection. It will be our job to direct them. Come, there is much to discuss.” He tried to direct Jacob onto the ship, but the younger man suddenly halted.

“Wait.” In the heat of his anger, this had seemed like a brilliant idea, but now as he stood on the precipice of making a choice to enter, he was anything but sure. Outside, he could still turn and run, but inside he would be trapped. But the medical supplies… Caspian raised a questioning eyebrow, when one of the white-haired giants emerged from the ship, the sunlight enunciating the blood red color of his uniform as he walked down the ramp. Jacob felt fear wrap around him like an icy snake, constricting tightly in his chest. These were the enemy… the ones that Eldereth had spoken about.

The giant was focused on Caspian, but when he caught sight of Jacob, his attention shifted. “Don’t move, boy,” he ordered in a thick accent, noticing the anticipatory tenseness of Jacob’s legs.

“Don’t fret Chukka, this is my son,” Caspian chided. “He’s come to make amends.”

“Indeed?” The giant wasn’t buying it, and grabbed Jacob’s arm before he could slip away, forcing him up the platform onto the ship. Caspian made to follow, but Chukka ordered him back. “I don’t need you for this, just the boy.”

“I’ve invested three years into him.
